who are we?

the legacy

The ABCA was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bobby Westbrooks, a practicing Chiropractor in St. Louis, Missouri, who envisioned empowering African American doctors and chiropractic students.

Dr. Westbrooks recognized that many African Americans were unfamiliar with the benefits of chiropractic care, and that chiropractic colleges struggled to attract minority students into their programs.  This caused schools to continually have significantly low enrollment of African American students.  The result was a significantly low number of African American graduates, and ultimately communities of color were underserved by the opportunities and benefits of chiropractic.

Dr. Westbrooks realized there was an immediate and ongoing need for minority supportive services in the chiropractic profession.  He founded the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) with just a handful of African American doctors.  He hoped to achieve some of his goals through the ABCA and to share them with some of his colleagues and friends.

The ABCA’s first convention was held in St. Louis, MO in 1981 with just 17 people in attendance.  Many agreed the most important aspect of that first convention was the networking between doctors and students.  Since that time, the ABCA has held an annual national convention, bringing together doctors, students, and supporters of chiropractic from across the nation and several other countries in a personal and professional environment.

Over the years, the ABCA has inspired, educated, and connected countless doctors with a sense of family and mentored hundreds of chiropractic students.  Most chiropractic college campuses have an active ABCA student chapter.  Each year, scholarships are awarded through the Harvey Lillard Scholarship Program.  The ABCA also participates in regular chiropractic career fairs to encourage African American students to consider chiropractic as a career.

The ABCA has not forgotten its humble beginnings. Today, despite its expanded scope, the organization remains mindful of the original objectives set forth by Dr. Westbrook.

THE NOW & THE FUTURE

Honoring the vision and the legacy Dr. Bobby Westbooks started. Life University’s SABCA chapter has been a safe place for some and a networking hub for others. Broadening the percentage of black chiropractor, we continue to trailblaze in and outside of the classroom. Over 200 black chiropractors have graduated from Life University, with hundreds more to follow. SABCA is the vision Dr. Bobby Westbrook saw; we are proud to be part of his enduring legacy. 2026 marks the 15th annual Black History Gala, where we will honor alumni, faculty, staff, auxiliary, and students!
